What other shops run
A starting point, not a spec to copy. Three patterns we see across the florists we work with.| Shop size | Receipt printer | Cash drawer | Label printer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small shop (one till) | Epson TM-T20IV (Ethernet) | Commodity 410mm with RJ12 | Brother QL-820NWB |
| Busy shop (one till, deliveries every day) | Star TSP143IV LAN | APG Vasario | Brother QL-1110NWB |
| Multi-till (two or more registers) | Star TSP143IV LAN at every till | APG Vasario at every till | One shared network Brother QL-1110NWB |
What you need (and what’s optional)
| Hardware | Do you need it? |
|---|---|
| Receipt printer | Yes, if you want to print receipts from the POS. Not needed if you’re happy with digital receipts only. |
| Cash drawer | Yes, if you handle cash. Wires into your receipt printer’s DK port. |
| Barcode scanner | Optional. Useful if you sell pre-packaged items or want faster checkout. |
| Card terminal | Not needed. See Payment methods. |
| Label printer | Optional. For deliveries — prints address labels with recipient name, address, order number, and a QR code your driver can scan. |

What to buy, by category
Receipt printers
Star Micronics and Epson are the two families we test. Two specific picks that are easy to source in the UK:- Star TSP143IV LAN — around £270. Current Star flagship with built-in Ethernet. The mid pick.
- Epson TM-T20IV (Ethernet) — around £200. Current model, Ethernet plug-in, no Windows driver faff. The budget pick.
Cash drawers
The brand doesn’t really matter as long as the cable matches your receipt printer. Choose one that fits your counter space.| Tier | Approximate UK price | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | £30-60 | Commodity 410mm drawer with RJ11/RJ12 cable, wired into the printer’s DK port |
| Mid-range | £60-100 | Star or Epson-branded drawers — usually sold on the same product page as the printer |
| Heavy-duty | £100-180 | APG Vasario — the standard for a busy counter |
Label printers
Brother QL is the primary recommendation — 62mm rolls cover delivery labels, message cards, and relay order labels off one roll. Zebra is the alternative for shops that want a wider label or already own one.| Pick | Approximate UK price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brother QL-820NWB | ~£170 | Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB. The default for most florists. |
| Brother QL-810W | ~£140 | Wi-Fi and USB. Same 62mm roll. |
| Brother QL-1110NWB | ~£250 | Wider model — for 102mm address labels. |
| Zebra ZD421 / ZD621 | £300-450 | Network-attached, wider thermal stock. Pick a cutter variant. |
Barcode scanners
Any USB scanner that emulates a keyboard and handles both 1D barcodes and 2D QR codes works. There’s nothing to set up — plug it in and scan. Budget options from Amazon (brands like Inateck, Tera, or Netum at around £15-35) are perfectly fine. Avoid Bluetooth-only models. See Barcode scanners for the rest.UK suppliers
We’re UK-focused, so these are the suppliers most of our shops use.- The Barcode Warehouse — strong stock on Star and Epson; helpful pre-sales team.
- ERS Online — UK specialist POS supplier. Good prices, helpful staff. Printer product pages usually list compatible cash drawers on the same listing.
- Printerland — UK reseller with strong stock on Brother and Star.
- Amazon UK — wider range but check the model and connection type carefully. Make sure you’re getting Ethernet or USB (whichever you want) and not Bluetooth-only.
Receipt rolls
Standard thermal receipt rolls, most commonly 80mm × 80mm (the Star mC-Print2 is the exception at 58mm). Buy in bulk from Amazon, and make sure they’re labelled thermal, not bond or ink.Label rolls
- Brother DK rolls. DK-22205 (62mm continuous) is the standard florist choice on the QL-810W and QL-820NWB. The QL-1110NWB takes wider 102mm continuous rolls.
- Zebra rolls. Zebra-compatible continuous thermal label stock, sized to the loaded label width.
A note on card payments
Digital Florists handles card payments through the software, so you don’t need a physical card reader plugged into your till. See Payment methods for how that works in the POS.Running more than one till
If you run two or more registers, the wiring follows three rules.- One Connect per till computer. You can’t share one Connect across two tills, even if both PCs are sat on the same counter. Each till is its own machine, its own Connect install, and its own device record.
- You can share a network receipt printer or network label printer between tills. Both copies of Connect point at the same printer’s IP and receipts queue from whichever till takes the sale. USB-attached printers can’t be shared — they’re one-PC-at-a-time.
- Each till needs its own cash drawer. Drawers fire through the DK port on a receipt printer, and each printer can only drive one drawer. So even if you share the receipt printer, you still need a printer-plus-drawer at each till in practice — otherwise only one cashier can take cash.
Common questions
What's the minimum I need to get started?
What's the minimum I need to get started?
Just a computer with a web browser. The POS works without any hardware. If you want to print receipts, a receipt printer is the first thing to buy.
Can I use hardware I already have?
Can I use hardware I already have?
If you have a Star or Epson receipt printer, it’ll almost certainly work — see supported models. Cash drawers are universal as long as the cable matches your receipt printer. USB barcode scanners always work. See Existing hardware for the full migration walkthrough.
Do I need a receipt printer if I'm not using POS?
Do I need a receipt printer if I'm not using POS?
No. Receipt printers are only for the POS till. If you’re using Digital Florists just for order management and delivery, you don’t need one — you can print worksheets and labels from any regular printer.
